Our Family Day Party

Family Day isn't usually much of a big deal for us. In the past it has been very much like any other weekend day, the only thing special about it being that my son got the day off school. This year, I decided it would be different. This year, I decided that we would actually celebrate Family Day and what it is meant to be. And I turned to my six year old for help.

I asked him what he wanted to spend our Family Day doing together. He thought about it for a moment and then told me that he wanted to have a party. A Family Party. So, together we sat down and planned our very own little McFarlane Family party. We planned food and activities and decorations. Then off we went in to Pembroke to get everything we would need.

First up was lunch. My son chose pizza and cupcakes. Good, reliable party food. Yum!

Cupcakes, of course, are a must for any party. Our original plan had been to make and decorate our own cupcakes, but we decided that it would be cheaper and easier and save us some time to just buy some.

Miss Avie really enjoyed her cupcakes and pizza!

We were all very amused that the icing turned all of our mouths, teeth, and tongues blue. Teeth were brushed very well afterwards...

Next on the agenda for our Family Day Party was games! We stopped by my parents' house to pick up some board games and such since we really don't have much of our own. We decided to try Hi-Ho-Cherry-O first, a favourite from my own childhood. Turns out it was a huge hit with my kids, too! My three-year-old and almost six-year-old both loved it, and asked again and again to play.

021818-39BLOG.jpg

While we played, my daughter had her own plans.

Poor Steve the Cat. Surprisingly, she was actually being extremely gentle (we've been working on using soft, gentle hands with the animals), but the look on Steve's face just gets me.

"Somebody do something about this kid!"

Anyway, after Hi-Ho-Cherry-O we realized that we forgot decorations for our party! So we cut some strips of construction paper and taped together a paper chain garland. I was so happy (and extremely relieved) to see my two boys working together so cooperatively on a project. It seems that most days all I hear is constant fighting, arguing, crying, and screaming from the moment they wake up to the moment they go to bed. Seeing them working together made my heart happy and gave me hope that they won't grow up completely hating one another.

My husband planned for us to play Monopoly next, but unfortunately we lasted all of two minutes. My three-year-old just wanted to play with the playing pieces and my six-year-old needed to be taught how to play before a proper game could be had. Not to mention that Avie was feeling very left out and stood at my side crying and asking to be picked up constantly. So, Monopoly went on the back burner very quickly.

(On a side note, my husband and six-year-old tried Monopoly again today and played for three hours straight! And guess what, my son beat my husband!)

We moved on to the next item on my son's list. A movie. It was between Spiderman and The Lego Batman Movie. The Lego Batman Movie won.

And what's a movie without popcorn?

Even the baby got in to the movie...

The final item on the list for our Family Day Party was a dance party. We had the idea to make it an extra special dance party by adding glow-in-the-dark balloons and glow sticks! So much fun was had!

I think it is safe to say that this was our best Family Day Weekend yet. It was nice to spend the whole day celebrating as a family and enjoying each other. And I think we may have a new annual tradition. :)

Week 6 of 52 - Low Light, Black & White

This week comes with an unofficial theme. I didn't intend for all of the photos to be shot in low light, or to all be black and white, but after three daysI realized that they were all turning out that way. So, I decided to make it my challenge for the week. I figured it would be great practise, at least!

 35. 365 - Watching Minecraft videos on his tablet.

 36. 365 - It was a rough night for my middle guy. Up at 2 a.m. Daddy finally got him to sleep on the couch downstairs. On the other hand, my little miss had an excellent night's sleep and was up at 5 a.m. ready to party. So this was my view on this early this morning.

 37. 365 - Father-son bonding over Minecraft. They are having a very intense discussion about what colour they should build their houses.

 38. 365 - You love these mittens. You where them all day around the house and even took them to bed with you. They don't even fit you. They are baby mittens.

 41. 365 - There was no way my lens was going to focus with how dark it was, so I free-lensed this one. She hates blankets (probably a good thing), and kicks them off in her sleep every night until she has one leg hanging out. One of her little quirks that I always want to remember.

Morning Frost

When I looked out the window this morning, I was met with a beautiful winter wonderland. Everything sparkled and glittered in the early morning sun. So despite the biting cold temperature, I threw on my coat and ran outside to snap a few photos of this gorgeous frost.

I lasted about two minutes before I lost all feeling in my fingers and my camera began having difficulties, but I am in love with the few photos I quickly snapped.

Week 5 of 52

 28. 365 - When I was told I was having a baby girl, I never imagined that the make-up experimentation started so early! In truth, though, she ate an orange marker.

 29. 365 - Another Monday with no kids around to photograph, so I used the cat. She was less than impressed with me.

 31. 365 - My son loves to sort and organize and line things up (and almost always he lines them up in an arc like this). Today he reorganized my mother's Tupperware cupboard.

 32. 365 - I asked him to tell me about his favourite Pokemon cards. He thought about it a moment, then his face lit up as he excitedly told me about Rydon and Rockruff and this other Pokemon whose name he didn't know, but he thinks is really cool anyway.

Week 4 of 52 - Chickens in the Mudroom

 21. 365 - It was the end of the day, I wasn't feeling well, the kids had been challenging all day, it was dark and there was minimal light, but I needed a photo. So we stuck the kids in a box, and voila.

 22. 365 - Mondays are for me. My husband takes the kids for a few hours and I get work done, clean, or if I have nothing else to do, just relax. This particular Monday was a snow day, so my oldest son got to accompany the other kids on their Daddy Day. They went to the dollar store and each got to pick out a toy. They picked swords and shields. When they got home they showed me all of their 'Link moves.' I asked him to show me his war face. This is what he gave me. Pretty impressive, I think!

 25. 365 - "What?" The chickens are getting bored with winter and have started picking on his pretty girl. We brought her into the mudroom to recover. My daughter found this quite exciting and happily gabbed away to our hen through the door.

 26. 365 - She is a daredevil. Always climbing. Always getting in to things she shouldn't. I hope she loves adventure and is just as curious as she grows, but right now it's going to give me a heart attack!

 27. 365 - Our chicks are getting too big for their starter brooder, so it's time to move them up to something bigger and more comfortable. The boys were so excited to help their dad build something for them.

Week 3 of 52 - Birthday Week!

This week we celebrated my youngest son's third birthday and my daughter's first, back to back! It was a week full of big excitement and big emotions for everyone. I never realized how difficult a birthday can be for a mama until I realized that my daughter would probably be our last baby, and this would probably be the last first birthday we celebrate.

But despite this, we had lots of fun with family and we enjoyed probably too much cake (as my brother put it "Poor spacing, Liz").

And now I am both relieved and a little sad that this crazy week is over.

 14. 365 - I snuck a photo of them playing cooperatively (a rare thing!) in their room together.

 15. 365 - Taken by the light of the TV in my room. My youngest boy fell asleep in my bed. Him sleeping is such a contrast to his awake self. When he is awake he is wild and active and non-stop. When he is sleeping he is so calm.

 17. 365 - My baby girl, probably my last baby, turned one today. We celebrated with a cake smash and a extra special ice cream smash. She loves ice cream, so we thought this would be a fun addition to the cake smash tradition.

 19. 365 - He had a tantrum. A big one. With crying and screaming and hitting and kicking. He refused to let me comfort him. For one hour he went on like this and all I could do was sit and wait until he was ready for me to comfort him. Finally, he let me pick him up. I tried to coax a smile out of him, make him feel a little better. Some tickles and some silly faces in the camera screen finally earned me this tiny half smile.

Week 2 of 52 - Tricky Light

This week was a challenge because a lot of the photos I took were in challenging lighting situations. I decided I wouldn't let that stop me, though! Moments don't stop and wait for pretty light.

 7. 365 - This is what happens when I leave my kids alone together for too long... Never... ever!... trust them when they are quiet!

 13. 265 - Sometimes the lighting sucks and you have to push your camera to the absolute limits. But sometimes the moment is worth it. My little girl trying ice cream for the first time. The faces she made were hilarious, yet she couldn't get enough of the ice cream.

Week 1 of 52 - A Personal Photography Project

Last year, in 2017, I decided to try my hand at a 365 photo project. My goal was to simply start photographing our everyday. Just the simple moments. The little things that I have come to cherish and adore. The important thing was simply to try and focus on finding something special in the ordinary moments of our life, and to get more photos of my own family (as if there wasn't enough already!)

I put no pressure on myself. These were not meant to be technically perfect. I wasn't going to stress if it was a little out of focus or if my composition wasn't just so. The moment is what mattered. And if I forgot to do a day, that was okay. But I actually did pretty well for my first attempt. That was until the Fall when I had an unfortunate accident which involved my camera ending up at the bottom of a creek! This put me back and stole my momentum.

This year I am attempting another 365 photo project, and my goal is to do better than last year, and hopefully complete the full year. So far, so good!

Here are the photos from January 1st to January 6th.

 1. 365 - Can you tell Daddy dressed him? Dragons and firetrucks definitely go together.

 2. 365 - My littlest loves it when her big brother scares her. He sneaks around the couch, then pops up and screams his head off. She laughs hysterically. I felt this moment was best told with two photos.

 3. 365 - My baby girl is nearly a year old. Both of her brothers started walking at 9 months and 10.5 months. We've been anxiously waiting to see when she would finally start walking. After Christmas she started talking a few little steps to Daddy, but every time I missed it. This was our attempt to coax her to take a few steps so I could see. It didn't work...
